Where Your First Ten Advertisers Actually Come From
The advice is usually to build a pipeline and start prospecting. For most publishers that is unnecessary, because the first ten advertisers are already within reach.
The short version
- Search your inbox for "advertis", "sponsor" and "rates" before doing anything else.
- Your Advertise Here page already gets traffic. Convert it rather than finding more.
- Companies sponsoring newsletters and podcasts in your niche are a warm list, not a cold one.
- Do not start with cold outreach. Exhaust warm demand first.
- Ten advertisers is enough to learn what your audience is actually worth.
Six places your first advertisers already are
Worked through one at a time below. None of it requires a cold list you bought.
-
1
The people who already emailed you
The warmest list you will ever have, and most of it went unanswered.
-
2
Your Advertise Here traffic
People are landing on that page already. Find out how many.
-
3
Companies reaching your audience elsewhere
If they buy ads in your niche, they buy ads in your niche.
-
4
The tools your readers use
Vendors your audience already pays for have the clearest reason to reach them.
-
5
Your own comments and community
Founders and operators read niche sites. Some of them are already there.
-
6
Advertisers on your direct competitors
Publicly visible, and proof the budget exists.
One: the people who already emailed you
Go back through your inbox and search for "advertis", "sponsor" and "rates". Nearly every publisher with a real audience has a handful of enquiries they answered slowly, or quoted vaguely, or never followed up. Those people wanted to buy. Send them a link to your portal with a short note.
This one source frequently produces the first several sales on its own.
Two: your existing Advertise Here traffic
People land on that page every month. Right now it converts them into emails, or into nothing. Pointing it at a portal converts the same traffic into purchases without you finding a single new visitor.
Three: companies already reaching your audience elsewhere
Look at who sponsors the newsletters your readers subscribe to, who advertises on the podcasts in your space, and who exhibits at the conferences your readers attend. These are companies that have already decided your audience is worth paying for. They are not a cold list, they are a warm one.
Four: the tools your readers use
Every niche has software, services and products its audience depends on. Those companies have marketing budgets and a specific need to reach exactly the people you have. A short, specific message naming the placement and the price converts far better than a generic sponsorship pitch.
Five: your own comments and community
In many niches, particularly technical and financial ones, the people building products are already in your audience. They read you. They are much easier to sell to than a stranger, because the relationship exists before the transaction.
Six: people who advertise with your direct competitors
Look at the banners on similar sites. Those advertisers have already demonstrated they buy this kind of placement in this kind of vertical. They are qualified in the only way that matters.
What not to do first
Do not start with cold outreach to a purchased list. It is the slowest, lowest-converting option available and it burns goodwill you cannot get back. Exhaust warm demand first, because there is more of it than you think and it costs nothing to reach.
The number that matters
Ten advertisers is not a large number, and it is enough to change how you understand your own business. It gives you real data on what your audience is worth, which prices hold, which placements sell, and what buyers care about. None of that is available from a network cheque, and all of it compounds.
