Do You Have to Leave AdSense to Sell Direct?
This is the question that stops more publishers than any other, and the answer is short enough to fit in the first line.
The short version
- No. You can sell ads directly and keep AdSense running on the same site, in the same slots.
- Google policy does not prohibit selling your own advertising alongside AdSense.
- The usual arrangement is direct deals first, AdSense as the fallback for whatever is unsold.
- The rules that do apply are the ones that already applied: no clicking your own ads, no misleading placement, and content policies.
- There is a limit on AdSense units per page in some formats, so count your slots before adding more.
No. You can sell advertising directly and keep AdSense running on the same site, and on the same ad slots.
Google's programme policies do not require exclusivity. They never have. Selling your own advertising is a normal thing for a publisher to do, and AdSense is designed to sit alongside it.
How the two actually fit together
The arrangement that works is an order of preference on each slot. Your direct advertisers are offered it first, because they pay more. Anything they do not take falls through to AdSense, which fills it as usual.
Your network keeps what you do not sell
Every ad request runs down a chain. Your direct deals get first refusal at your price. Anything unsold falls through to what you run today.
This is called a passback: the inventory you do not sell keeps earning from AdSense. See how a passback works.
What you actually earn
| AdSense only | Direct plus AdSense | |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions | 40,000 | 40,000 |
| Sold direct | none | 24,000 at $12 per thousand |
| Direct income | $0 | $288.00 |
| Filled by AdSense | 40,000 | 16,000 |
| AdSense income at $0.90 | $36.00 | $14.40 |
| Total for the month | $36.00 | $302.40 |
AdSense earns less because it has fewer impressions to fill. That is the trade, and it is $21.60 against $288.
The rules that do apply
None of these are new. They are the AdSense policies you are already keeping, and running direct advertising does not change them.
- Do not click your own ads, and do not ask anybody else to. This is the one that gets accounts closed, and it has nothing to do with direct sales.
- Do not place ads so they get clicked by mistake. A direct ad sitting immediately beside an AdSense unit with no visual separation is worth a second look, because ambiguity about which is which is the thing the policy is about.
- Label advertising as advertising. Particularly native units that look like your own content.
- Content policies still apply to your page, and they apply whether or not the offending thing is an ad you sold.
Where the confusion comes from
Two things, and they are both real, just not this.
Ad networks that do demand exclusivity. Some managed monetisation companies require all your inventory, because their model depends on controlling the whole page. If you are with one of those, that contract is the constraint, not AdSense.
The older AdSense terms. Google used to be stricter about competing contextual ad units appearing alongside AdSense on the same page. That restriction was relaxed years ago and the current policies are the ones that count.
A sensible way to start
Without touching what works
-
1
Pick one slot
Your most visible one. Leave the rest on AdSense untouched.
-
2
Set a floor above your AdSense eCPM
Whatever AdSense pays you per thousand views on that slot, price above it. Now a direct sale cannot be worth less than what it displaced.
-
3
Set AdSense as the fallback
Paste the same AdSense code you run today into the fallback. Unsold views go to AdSense, apart from one in ten that shows your Advertise Here card, which you can switch off.
-
4
Watch it for a month
The number to compare is total income for that slot, not the AdSense figure on its own, which will go down and is supposed to.
The honest caveat
The AdSense number in your Google dashboard will fall. People find this alarming, and it is arithmetic: fewer impressions going to AdSense means less AdSense revenue.
The number that matters is the two added together. If you only look at one dashboard you will conclude something has gone wrong, and it is worth deciding now which figure you are going to judge this by.
