Sell Newsletter Sponsorships From Your Ad Portal

The sponsor who wants Tuesday's issue should not have to wait for your reply. Here is how a send gets booked, paid for and approved without one.

The short version

  • A newsletter sponsor spot is one unit of inventory per send, so it sells at a flat price per send rather than per thousand impressions.
  • Pyrobid adds a newsletter as a zone beside the web slots, at 300x250 or 600x200, with up to four sends a day and a price for each.
  • Sponsors book one or more sends, upload one banner and pay from their balance or by card, and the publisher approves each booking before it runs.
  • Mailchimp, Kit, Brevo, beehiiv, Klaviyo and ActiveCampaign keep one snippet in the email template for good, and other email tools take a fresh snippet each issue.
  • Clicks are counted with link scanners and bots left out, and opens are not counted, because mail apps load and cache pictures before anyone reads them.

Your newsletter's sponsor spot now sells the way your ad slots do. Add the newsletter as a zone, set your sends and a price for each, and sponsors book a send, upload their banner and pay in your own branded portal. You approve it, and it runs in that email.

Most newsletter sponsorships are still sold by email. A sponsor asks for rates, you reply, they pick a date, you send an invoice, and the night before the send you are chasing a banner. Every step waits on somebody, and a sponsor who has to wait books somewhere else.

Why a newsletter sells by the send

A send is scarce. Two emails a day is two sponsor spots a day, and once a send has gone out its spot is gone. Every subscriber asked to hear from you, and the ad sits inside the email they chose to open, which is why newsletter space earns well from a small list.

It is also why a newsletter is sold per send, at a flat price, rather than per thousand impressions. How to price it next to your site is in bundling newsletter and site placements.

How it works for you

Setting up your newsletter

  1. 1

    Add it as a zone

In Create Zone, pick Newsletter and a size: 300x250, the usual size in newsletters, or 600x200 across the width of the email.

  2. 2

    Set your sends

Up to four a day, each with a name, a time and your price, on the days the newsletter goes out.

  3. 3

    Paste the snippet

Pick your email tool. Mailchimp, Kit, Brevo, beehiiv, Klaviyo and ActiveCampaign keep one snippet in the template for good. Other tools take a fresh one each issue, emailed to you the evening before.

  4. 4

    Approve what gets booked

Each paid booking waits in Ad Approval beside your web ads. Decline one and the money goes back to the sponsor's balance. Or let paid bookings straight in.

How it works for your sponsors

They sign up in your portal, choose Newsletter in Create Ad, pick one or more sends and upload one banner. They pay from their balance or by card through your own Stripe account. A booking you decline, or do not approve before its send, goes back to their balance by itself, and so does one whose ad never loads in the email.

A send nobody booked does not go out empty. It shows your Advertise Here card, your own banner, or nothing at all, and the card takes readers who run a business to your booking page.

What it costs

Nothing on top of your plan. Newsletter zones are part of Pyrobid from $29.99 a month, and we take no share of what sponsors pay you. Card payments go through your own Stripe account, at Stripe's own rates.
